Objective

The main objectives of this course are to 

  1. Provide a formal knowledge of communication and writing techniques.
  2. Understand the use of human communication and writing practices as they occur across various contexts. 
  3. Develop student’s formal and informal communication skills that can enhance their professional abilities collaboratively.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Diploma in Writership and Communication, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the basic methods of communication and writing.
  2. Provide a basic knowledge of the field and an understanding of how it relates to the society in local and global contexts.  
  3. Develop creative communication skills and achieve the desired results.
  4. Improve professional communication skills to communicate accurately, clearly and in a neutral manner.

Description of the course

The Diploma in Writership and Communication course was introduced in 1987 by the Department of Sinhala and Mass Communication of University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This course is the oldest diploma course offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The main aim of the course is to provide a university level education to those who are engaged in writing and communication but do not have access to a formal advanced education.

This course provides subject related knowledge in the fields of language, literature and communication relevant to the art of writing and communication. This is the only course currently being conducted in Sri Lanka covering these respected fields.
