Hansinee Shashiprabha Amarabandu represented the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has won the 1st Runner up award and has been awarded a Rs.100,000 worth two year scholarship by the institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka (CMA) in the Budding Economist competition and achieved this victory by competing with the participants  of 10 state and private universities including 2 foreign universities who follow Economics or Management degrees at the 1st  Sri Lanka Forum of Junior Business Economists (SLFJBE) Summit  – 2019.

Under the theme of “Strengthening the External Sector to achieve a 7% Economic Growth” the summit was hosted by the Department of Business Economics, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the University of Colombo in collaboration with Sri Lanka Forum of Junior Business Economists (SLFJBE) at the Centre for Banking studies (Central Bank of Sri Lanka)– Rajagiriya, Colombo on 15th of August 2019.

This was a promising inaugural project of SLBESA which was an address for the prevailing need of upsurging interest among undergraduates to contribute towards the economic development while creating a hub of expertise and a platform to share knowledge among the undergraduates, academics, policy makers and renowned business personnel leading to a productive discussion over the issues to be addressed on achieving a sustainable Economic growth in future. As the keynote speaker Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy addressed the gathering on strengthening the external sector to achieve a 7% economic growth.

Nine contestants represented the team of the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura for the events;

The Budding Economist competition was the main inter university competition among the competitions such as Economic Debates, Panel Discussions, Critical Writing and Quiz competitions. The 1st round was a written test on general knowledge on Micro and Macro Economic theories and applications as well as contemporary Economic issues at local and global level. The top 5 contestants who emerged out of all the contestants in the first round took part in the second round of the Budding Economist competition. Hansinee Amarabandu was among one of the top 5 contestants of “The Budding Economist” Competition who faced the final round; the oral test on creative thinking in relation to any Economic theory and vocabulary to interpret a given image within the given time limit of 3 minutes and won the 1st runner-up award. The marks were awarded based on the significance and academic gravity of thought, clarity and originality of expression, creativity and structure of presentation.

J’pura Employability Skills Award Ceremony is specially organized to admire and identify the best skillful undergraduates who have actively participated in the extracurricular activities to enhance their soft skills. This event will be encouraged the students to develop their soft skills and be a capable person who can cope with the co-operate sector. Considering all the extracurricular activities in the university we decided to offer following awards. All the applicants were judged by a panel including five members from the private sector.

Radhini Subodha Mendis Won the Best Employability Skills Achiever Award of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in year 2017.
